Method
 

  1. Combine 3.5 cups of bread flour, 2 teaspoons of instant dry yeast, 1.5 tablespoons of sugar, and 1.5 teaspoons of salt in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Gradually add 1.33 cups of warm water to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface using 0.75 cups of extra bread flour until smooth and elastic.
  4. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  6. Shape each piece into a ball and create a hole in the center to form the bagels.
  7. Let the shaped bagels rest while you prepare a pot of boiling water.
  8. Boil each bagel for about 1 minute on each side.
  9. Remove from water and sprinkle with caraway seeds, minced garlic, poppy seeds, dried onions, and sesame seeds as desired.
  10. Bake the bagels in a preheated oven until golden brown.
