Ingredients
  

Filling
  • 2 cups blackberries fresh or frozen
  • ½ cup sugar adjust based on sweetness preference
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
Dumpling Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ cup milk whole or buttermilk
  • ¼ cup butter melted
Sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Prepare the Filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir gently to coat the berries and set aside.
Make the Dumpling Dough
  1. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Prepare the Sauce
  1. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Assemble and Cook
  1. Pour the blackberry mixture into a baking dish.
  2. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough over the blackberries.
  3. Pour the boiling sauce over the dumplings.
  4. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the dumplings are golden.
